5 Senses Fun!

Yikes!  It's already Sunday and it seems this has become a bad habit…..I'm just now getting to my Five for Friday post offered by Doodle Bugs Teaching.

This week, we began a 'Five Senses' unit.  This is one of my favorite themes to teach.  There are SO many fun things to incorporate into the little loves learning.

We began with the sense of sight.  One activity that brought lots of giggles was having a peer hide under a blanket while another little friend had to look around to see who was missing.  It was a great way to incorporate language and social skills, too.

As you can see the little learners LOVED this!

We also did some flashlight painting with the lights off, which was super fun for my loves.

Next, we explored the sense of touch.  Of course, shaving cream is a must.

We made texture boards for another activity to learn about touch.

 For the sense of sound, we painted with musical instruments attached to foam brushes.

This was a perfect example of how the process often is more important than the product.

They really, really enjoyed listening to the different sounds they could make by painting faster and slower.

We also matched sounds of objects hidden in plastic eggs.

We also played a 'Sounds of Home' lotto game to emphasize the importance of hearing.

For an art project that incorporates all the senses, we made this Potato Head creativity.

The little learners were amazing at being able to tell what senses they were using while making our Potato Heads.

We were on spring break during Easter, so on Monday the Easter Bunny came to visit.

It was a nice way to come back to school after a week off!

Bunnies, Chicks, & Jelly Beans!

Yikes!  I did it again.  It's Sunday evening and the weekend has flown by with nary a post from me about what we did in class this past week.  So, without further ado, here is my Five for Friday (on Sunday) offered by Doodle Bugs Teaching.

 We began the week making these adorable bunnies by gluing on Marshmallows after tracing around a template with a black marker.

 We then added a pom pom nose and circles for eyes.

 I love how they turned out.

We also made chicks by gluing on a cracked egg shell over an oval.  We then added wiggle eyes, feathers, grass, and decorations for the egg shells.

{I forgot to get an unclose picture, so I tried to zoom from my door photo, so please forgive that they are blurry!}

We sorted and graphed jelly beans {a favorite activity of the littles}

It's always nice to sneak in a little learning when the learners just think they are having fun!

Speaking of jelly beans, we did a few more things with them this week….

I was so pleasantly surprised when my afternoon sweetie pies actually were able to read color words with no cues or prompting while sorting by color.  It was amazing!  They are going to be so ready for kindergarten in the fall!

Another great activity was finding the same/different jelly beans from a freebie by Kate and Fun in ECSE.  

And last, but not least, we decorated bags and went on an egg hunt at the end of the week.

Community Helpers!

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for the weekly Five for Friday to showcase our week in school.

 We continued learning about Community Helpers.

A local police officer visited our class and explained the duties of his job.  

 

He was wonderful with the little ones, taking the time to explain how he uses all the equipment and answering all the questions everyone had.

The little ones were totally enthralled.

We made these police cars by painting paper plates blue,

then cutting the bottom off and cutting two triangle shapes at the top.

We added a siren, windows, star, and wheels.

The littles loved them.

Since it's assessment time, I had the sweeties cut out shapes and match the vehicle to the community helper.

I kept the finished product to add into their portfolios.  It's amazing to see how much growth has taken place with cutting skills since the beginning of the school year.

Another job we discussed and role played was that of a veterinarian.  Everyone was so excited.

They picked an animal and filled out a well check or illness sheet.  They took the animal's temperature, heartbeat, pulse, looked in the ears, and gave a shot, if needed.

Ans, last but not least, we took a brief break from our community helper theme to listen to 'The Cat in the Hat' read to us this week.  

It was fantastic!  The cat captured everyones attention for a full 30 minutes.  Gotta love kids getting into books.  :)

Mail, Garbage, and Bones!

 It's been a busy and fun week.  Our theme has been community helpers.  Take a look at some of our activities.

We learned about mail carriers and then made these mail pouches.

The little writers then filled out postcards, practicing writing letters, abc's, and drawing.

There were so many stages of writing happening in this activity.

 

 It was exciting to see.  The next day everyone wanted to make more postcards and deliver them to their friends.  I always love to see my sweet ones get excited about writing.

After reading 'I Stink', we made these adorable trash trucks.

I love, love, love how they turned out.  :)

  

I love the different characteristics each truck took on.  :)

We also played an alphabet game based off the book.  Each little learner picked a card that had a picture of something the trash truck ate.  They had to decide what letter of the alphabet the picture started with and then bingo dot the letter on a garbage truck.

The little learners loved this activity.  They think the pictures from the book are hilarious!

After learning about the medical field, we made these 'x-rays' of our hands.

We started off painting our hands and wrists with white paint on black paper.

Then, we squeezed glue and placed q-tips to look like the bones in our hands and wrists.
